Who named Earl Grey Tea? Earl Grey Tea is named after Lord Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, British Prime Minister in the 1830s. According to the Grey family, this black tea was specially blended for Lord Grey. The water in the family home, Howick Hall, in Northumberland, had an odd taste, so they added bergamot to the tea offset the taste of the water and it proved to be incredibly popular with family, friends and guests.
