What is Coffee from Ethiopia?
Our coffee farmers use a unique natural dry-process rather than the typical wet-process used in most equatorial growing regions. The dry process allows the whole coffee cherry to dry on the coffee seed, in the sun, which imparts a blueberry and blackberry flavor to the coffee bean, then the surrounding skin, fruit layer, and parchment shell of each individual seed are removed. When roasted properly you can literally taste the blueberry flavor profile in this hand-roasted coffee; it is not artificial flavoring, we never use flavoring, what you taste is quality green coffee beans, dried in the sun with the cherry still on the seed, and then an artisan coffee roaster working magic on the coffee beans to bring the berry note out of the coffee bean and into fruition. Once hand-roasted, then the coffee, like all of our coffees, is quickly packaged in one-way-valve bags and shipped right to your front door.
What is the Production of Coffee in Ethiopia?
Coffee production is a longstanding tradition that dates back dozens of centuries. Ethiopia is the world's seventh-largest producer of coffee and Africa's top producer. Ethiopia is where Coffea Arabica, the coffee plant, originates. Ethiopian coffee accounts for around three percent of the global coffee market and around sixty percent of foreign income comes from coffee.
Ethiopia is considered to be the birthplace of the coffee plant and coffee culture. It is thought that coffee was discovered in Ethiopia as long ago as the ninth century. According to legend, the 9th-century goat-herder Kaldi discovered the coffee plant after noticing the energizing effect the coffee cherries had on his flock. Kaldi reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and the energizing power of coffee beans and ground coffee began to spread.
