Loving Weaver's African Coffee Blend

Sal Bonavita Purchased Peet's Coffee from Alfred Peet in 1979

Sal Bonavita came to our Coffee Roastery and coffee shop in San Rafael, California, and shared how much he enjoyed Weaver's African Coffee Blend.  Sal Bonavita purchased Peet's Coffees from Mr. Alfred Peet in 1979 and sold Peet's Coffees to Jerry Baldwin in 1984.  Sal Bonavita hired John Weaver to work at Peet's Coffee in 1980, and Sal worked closely with Mr. Alfred Peet and John Weaver  on the art of roasting coffee. Sal swings by our Coffee Roastery on a regular basis to check on us and grab a few pounds of our Weaver's Coffee, because Weaver's Coffee is the only coffee Sal drinks. We think this is really cool, having a legend drinking coffee in our coffee shop and hanging out with us in our Coffee Roastery.

How to Make Weaver's African Coffee Blend

We decided to pull back the curtain on our Weaver's Africa Blend Coffee and showcase an interesting Ethiopia coffee farm. This is a unique look into coffee beans grown in Ethiopia, from a farm where we source green arabica coffee beans. There are actually four different arabica green coffee beans that we hand roast and hand blend to create our African Coffee Blend. However, since the arabica green coffee beans we source are usually kept top secret, we will only share information on one Ethiopia coffee farm.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Natural Misty Valley arabica green coffee bean. Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Coffee (also spelledYirgachefe, Yergacheffe, orYerga Chefe) is a micro-region within the much larger coffee region of Sidama (orSidomo) in Southern Ethiopia.

FACTOID: Ethiopia is widely considered the birthplace of coffee. The story goes that a shepherd noticed his goats were more active after consuming coffee berries. It is believed that the cultivation of the Ethiopia coffee plant began as early as the 12th century.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Coffee - The Natural Misty Valley coffee bean has long been prized for its delicate, tea like aromatics and clean citrus flavor.  This is a prime example of the fruitiness, complexity, and character of this Natural Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee. In the cup, the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Coffee - Natural Misty Valley coffee truly delivers with a perfumed floral aroma, which leads into a crisp, and complex, fruit basket flavor.  The Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Coffee - Natural Misty Valley coffee is subject to an incredible amount of care from start to finish.

"When the ripe coffee cherries are first brought to the mill to dry on raised African beds, they are constantly turned (day and night) for the first 48 hours to ensure an even evaporation of the moisture from the coffee cherry. This lends a consistency and cleanliness to the cup, which can prove difficult in a process prone to mold and uneven air circulation. Once the coffee cherry is fully dried and the skin, mucilage, and parchment removed, it is sorted and traded through the Ethiopia Coffee Exchange as a Grade 1 Yirgacheffe."

FACTOID: When coffee was taken to other countries, people had to find ways to adapt it to the local climate. Arabica coffee grows best in places that have climates similar to that of Ethiopia: mountainous, tropical, with moderate wet and dry seasons. Ethiopian Coffee Buying Manual, USAID, 2011.

Below is great short documentary on the history of Ethiopian coffee.

We purchase these incredible Ethiopia arabica green coffee beans from coffee farmers and serve them to our customers in our coffee shops and sell them online and in our cafes as well.

The Ethiopian coffee farmers provide us with the highest quality arabica from along the equatorial belt. Our Master Coffee Roaster, John Weaver, and his apprentices then roast the arabica green coffee beans to "Cup Perfection". The coffee roasters work closely to hand blend the green coffee beans, from different coffee regions of African in small batches, and then hand roast the small batches of green coffee beans throughout the day to create this unique Weaver's African Blend Coffees. Our Coffee Roastery smells like heaven on a regular basis. We find that customers will actually drive past our Coffee Roastery on US Route 101, smell the roast, and then pull off the highway and track us down through Yelp or google search.

We could sacrifice on quality, by purchasing less expensive green coffee beans, and this is exactly what seems to happen when a San Francisco Bay Coffee Roaster grows in volume, but we won't be taking that road. We will continue on our journey, remaining a distinctive high end differentiated brand with high attachment to a loyal customer base. We will continue to make this delicious artisan coffees for you. Thank you for being there for us. Please let us know what you think about our coffees. Read our Reviews and comments on our website. Thank you!
